The Story Behind the Song
Samantha wanted to honor her parents' 40th wedding anniversary with something truly special. They live on a small farm in Tennessee and built a life from the ground up - raising three kids, weathering storms (literal and emotional), and always finding a way to laugh through it all. Her dad still plays the same old guitar on the porch in the evenings, and her mom hums along while making dinner.
Samantha wanted to surprise them at their anniversary party with a song that tells the story of their love, their grit, and the little moments that made their marriage a legacy.
Who is the song for?
Rick and Joanne
What is the occasion?
Anniversary
What would you like the song to be about?
I want the song to tell the story of how my parents started out with nothing, built a life together on love and hard work, and never gave up on each other. Something that honors the beauty in the small, everyday moments they’ve shared.
My parents met in high school and moved onto a little piece of land in Tennessee. Dad worked long hours, Mom raised the kids and kept everything together. They’ve seen hard times. Dad still plays the same old guitar on the porch and Mom still hums in the kitchen like she always has.
Any favorite phrases, inside jokes, or unique details you'd love us to work in?
My Dad always says “one day at a time” and my Mom’s cornbread is kind of legendary in our family! They graduated high school in 1983.

Lyrics
They met back in high school, summer of '83
He had a pickup and a plan, she had dreams and sweet iced tea
Tied the knot before they knew
What the world would put them through
But love was enough, and they believed
They bought a little land in Tennessee
Built a home with calloused hands and faith that ran deep
She made magic in the kitchen
He’d hum along on the porch pickin’
Forty years and still the roots run deep
One day at a time, that’s how they made it
Through the storms and the bills and the babies they raised with
Laughter in the hard years, grace in the fight
Holding each other every single night
Rick and Joanne, a love that don’t fade
Built on sweat, on heart, and on faith
A simple life, and it’s more than just fine
'Cause they lived it in love
One day at a time
He still plays that same old song
On the front porch when the work is gone
And she still hums while making cornbread
Like she did back when they first wed
One day at a time, that’s how they made it
Through the lean times and the long nights they faced with
Smiles through the silence, hope in their eyes
Finding forever in the simplest life
Rick and Joanne, hearts intertwined
Never needed much, just love and the time
To prove something real, something rare you can’t buy
They wrote their forever
One day at a time
Yeah, they built a life
And it’s still shining bright
One front porch, two hands
One day at a time
